What is Autism really?

Updated: Sep 4, 2023

One of the many interesting things that I have discovered on this Autism healing journey, is that every single doctor I met with had a completely different idea of what Autism is. This means Autism is very much a mystery even to the "experts". No one knows why or how a child becomes Autistic. What most doctors and professionals working with spectrum children will tell you is that Autism is:

  1. a genetic disorder

  2. triggered by the environment but they don't know what

  3. there is no recovery

  4. symptom management is best through services like OT, PT, ST, ABA therapy and pharmaceuticals

Out of the 8 specialists we saw, not one could really answer my question definitively. I was tired of services like OT, PT, ST not really healing my child but only managing the current acute symptoms. I wanted to know why this was happening to him. No one on my side of the family or my husbands had someone who had tics and stimming to regulate themselves. There was definitely more going on and so I decided to take matters into my own hands and educate myself on the why. After many years of my own research, taking classes, speaking with other people who have been searching for the answer to the same questions I had, I found what I as looking for. I have a much different perspective on what exactly Autism is. There has been many studies over the last 20 plus years, that have shown Autism to have underlying medical causes. What I truly believe, is that Autism is actually the symptom of other issues that are going on within an individual; NOT the diagnosis. Some of these medical issues can include one or more of the following:

  • Vitamin/Mineral deficiency

  • Heavy metal toxicity

  • Primitive reflexes not integrated

  • Gut dysbiosis

  • Brain encephalitis

  • Mitochondrial dysfunction

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • PANS/PANDAS

  • Cerebral folate deficiency

  • Immune dysfunction

  • Toxic mold exposure

  • Seizures

  • Elevated histamine

As you can see, there is a long list of possible causes for the symptoms of Autism. Each of these correlate to specific autistic symptoms. For instance - a child's tics may be caused by toxic mold exposure or PANS. I will go into each of these and their symptoms in other posts. I believe that once the true origin of the Autism symptoms are found, true healing can begin.

So where does someone even begin to unravel this mystery? It really depends on what is going on with your child. At Warriors of Care, we do a comprehensive assessment to determine a plan of action. The plan of action is a blueprint we will use to guide us towards getting your child on an appropriate and comprehensive treatment plan. To schedule an assessment with us click here.
